The Reddit comment point is interesting. My anecdotal read is that Reddit works for ChatGPT (which heavily weights Reddit/HN for dev tools) but not for Perplexity and AI Mode. So it depends which engine you're trying to move. For my category, ChatGPT is the one that matters most for conversions.
The Claude/ChatGPT split is real for my category too but flipped. Claude doesn't really cite me at all — my product is in a non-dev category where I don't think Claude has strong doc coverage. ChatGPT cites me via Reddit. So the engine split is definitely category-specific, not universal.
ngl this is the most useful post i've read this week. The 'static, never-updated site looks like a dead company' point is obvious in retrospect but I had never framed it that way. Going to check what our last publish date looks like to an AI engine right now.
wait, ChatGPT-User is a different user-agent from OAI-SearchBot? I only had OAI-SearchBot in my Allow list. Going to check if ChatGPT-User is being blocked by a wildcard rule.
