AI Mode vs AI Overviews — the actual difference
Google has two AI-powered surfaces inside Search, and they are commonly conflated. They are not the same:
- AI Overviews — the AI summary panel that appears above classic organic results on google.com for ~50% of US queries (mid-2026). The user still sees the regular SERP below.
- AI Mode— a separate chat-style tab on google.com. The user types a question, Google's AI answers in a conversational format with citations. There is no classic SERP at all in this surface.
Both are powered by Googlebot (not Google-Extended— that's training only). Both inherit Google's core ranking signals. But they differ in what they show and which sources they weight. The May 6 2026 update widened AI Mode's source mix significantly. See our deeper analysis in Google AI Overviews vs AI Mode.
The May 6 2026 update — what changed
On May 6, 2026 Google's VP of Product (Search), Hema Budaraju, announced a multi-part update to AI Mode and AI Overviews. The biggest shifts:
- "Expert Advice" section in AI Mode answers — pulls from forum threads and community discussions where domain experts have weighed in. Reddit, niche subreddit threads, Stack Exchange, and similar UGC sources are surfaced with user-handle attribution.
- "Community Perspectives" section — pulls from broader public discussions, also heavy on Reddit and forum content. Distinct from Expert Advice in that it surfaces multiple viewpoints, not just expert ones.
- Outbound link visibility increased. AI Mode now shows source URLs more prominently than the pre-May version did. Citations have a clearer effect on downstream traffic.
- Creator handle / community attribution on video clips embedded in AI Mode answers — YouTube channels and Reddit users get named.

Where AI Mode pulls from in 2026
BrightEdge measurements across hundreds of buyer queries (early 2026):
- 54% of AI Mode citationscome from pages already in the top-10 organic ranking for the same query. Classic SEO is the primary filter — if you're not ranking, you're mostly not citing.
- ~17.5% UGC share (Reddit, Quora, forums). This is 35× more than ChatGPT (0.5%) and 87× more than Gemini (0.2%). AI Mode is the most community-friendly major AI surface in 2026.
- YouTube and Wikipedia over-represented in the high-authority slots. AI Mode pulls structured video transcripts as a primary source for procedural / how-to queries.
- Government and academic domains heavily cited for medical / legal / financial topics. AI Mode is conservative on Your-Money-Your-Life (YMYL) categories — non-authoritative brand sites get filtered hard there.
Bots — Googlebot and Google-Extended
Googlebot— the bot that drives bothAI Mode and AI Overviews. If Googlebot can't crawl your site, you can't appear in either surface. Almost never block this.Google-Extended— opt-out token for Gemini and Vertex AI training. Does not control AI Mode or AI Overviews citation eligibility — those useGooglebot.
Practical implication: blocking Google-Extended opts you out of Google AI training without affecting AI Mode visibility. You cannot cleanly opt out of AI Mode without also opting out of Google Search entirely — they share the same crawl. See our robots.txt for AI bots guide for the full bot map.
The 8-step action plan
- Fix Google ranking first.54% of AI Mode citations come from top-10 organic. If you're not ranking, AI Mode optimisation is downstream of an SEO problem — fix that before chasing AI-specific tactics.
- Ship Organization + SoftwareApplication JSON-LD. Google's entity graph is the bedrock of AI Mode's understanding of who you are. Use our JSON-LD generator if you don't have these yet.
- Build Reddit presence in your category. Expert Advice and Community Perspectives sections pull preferentially from Reddit threads with high engagement. See Reddit citation strategy.
- Ship FAQPage JSON-LD on key pages. AI Mode pulls verbatim answers from FAQPage blocks for "how does X work" queries.
- Publish opinionated comparison pages. AI Mode citations heavily favour pages that lay out a clear "X vs Y" analysis with honest pros and cons. See our /compare pages for the pattern.
- Get a YouTube channel with searchable transcripts. AI Mode embeds video clips with creator-handle attribution. A 5-minute explainer about your category with proper transcripts beats a thousand-word blog post for procedural queries.
- Refresh date metadata on top pages. AI Mode favours fresh content. Bump
dateModifiedwhen you make meaningful updates. - Measure Share of Voice through AI Mode. Our full product runs scans through DataForSEO's

Common mistakes
- Confusing AI Mode with AI Overviews. Different surfaces, different placements, different measurement. AI Overviews appears above organic; AI Mode is a separate tab.
- Blocking
Google-Extendedhoping to opt out of AI Mode. You can't. AI Mode runs onGooglebot. - Ignoring Reddit and Community Perspectives. 17.5% UGC citation share — single highest-leverage source AI Mode offers. If you're in B2B SaaS, "Reddit isn't for our buyers" is increasingly wrong — see the May 6 announcement.
- Hoping to rank without organic SEO basics. AI Mode is downstream of Googlebot. Page speed, mobile rendering, technical SEO, internal linking — these all matter the same way they always have.
How to verify it actually works
- Test AI Mode directly. Open google.com in a fresh browser, click the AI Mode tab, ask your buyer-question panel. Note which sources are cited.
- Use Search Console. Google reports AI Mode impressions and clicks under the standard Performance view in Search Console. Filter by query type to isolate AI-driven traffic.
- Run a controlled audit. The full GEO Tracker AI product runs AI Mode through DataForSEO and captures citation source URLs over time. Free Perplexity audit at /grader; AI Mode tracking is in Pro tier.
